Articles of Piracy

Rights

Every man shall have a say in the affairs of the moment. In engagement he is to obey superiors sharply, and in work shall follow the Boatswain.

Every man shall have a equal title to fresh provisions and strong liquors when seized, and may use them at pleasure unless made necessary by scarcity to ration.

Every man shall have a share of the rewards of the expedition, unless deprived of it by breach of the Articles.

Rules

If any man shall defraud the Company to the value of a silver, he shall suffer marooning or death.

If any man shall defraud another man, he shall suffer his ears and nose slit, and shall be set upon shore.

If any man shall game at cards or dice for money or goods, he shall suffer his ears and nose slit, and shall be set upon shore.

If any man shall offer to run away, or keep any secret from the Company, or desert in engagement, he shall suffer marooning or death.

If any man shall strike another man while aboard ship, he shall suffer 40 stripes lacking one on the bare back. Every man's quarrels to be settled on shore.

If any man shall kill his fellow outside of a duel on shore with consent of both parties, he shall suffer death.

If any man shall meddle with a prudent woman without her consent, he shall suffer marooning or death.

If any man shall be guilty of drunkenness in time of engagement, he shall be cut off from his share, and suffer such other punishment as the Captain and majority of the Company see fit.

If any man shall be guilty of drunkenness while on his watch, or while attending to his duties, he shall suffer such punishment as the Captain and majority of the Company see fit.

If any man shall neglect to keep his arms clean and fit for engagement, or neglect his duties, he shall be cut off from his share, and suffer such other punishment as the Captain and majority of the Company see fit.

Pay

The fund of all payments is the stock of what is gotten by the expedition. It is to be awarded as follows, in order:

First any man maimed or mutilated shall receive his compensation. For the loss of a strong arm six hundred pieces of silver; for the loss of a weak arm five hundred pieces of silver; for a strong leg five hundred pieces of silver; for a weak leg four hundred pieces of silver; for an eye one hundred pieces of silver, for a finger of the hand one hundred pieces of silver.

Second if the ship must be restocked, repaired, or re-provisioned at cost, this is paid for.

The remaining is divided into as many equal shares as needs. Five shares awarded to the Captain, or chief Commander. Four shares awarded to the Mate, the Doctor, Gunner, Boatswain, Helmsman, Mage, and Carpenter. Ordinary seamen draw one share apiece.
