After a valiant performance in battle and a superb victory, Devlin was sworn a Knight in the Court Of Kell and made captain in the Order of the Rose. Not long after, Devlin met and fell in love with a lady named Roselyn and they soon married. Bliss was not to last though, while Devlin was away on duty in the south, a plague struck the city of Kell and many were dying. When the Order was notified of the epidemic, orders were to save the healthy and abandon the sick. Devlin requested permission to take leave in regards to make sure his wife was safe. This infuriated the quartermaster, after failing to restore his command over the young men, the quartermaster then angrily lunged himself at Devlin with sword drawn. Devlin anticipated his attack and readied his on blade while he quickly turned back around. The incident was over in a matter of seconds ending with his blade in the quartermaster's gut. With no time to care, Devlin left, leaving the quartermaster to bleed out. After returning to Kell, he searched tirelessly for his Roselyn, only to find that she died days earlier from the illness. Knowing he would surely be hunted down for the killing of the quartermaster and desertion, he quickly gathered any belongings he could easily carry on horse and left silently into the night.
